Tyrolit Group: a century of innovation

Since 1919, Tyrolit Group has been dedicated to pioneering and reimagining its processes for more sustainable production. As a committed member of the SEAM label, the company has adopted an active ESG approach at all levels. Once again this year, Tyrolit Group is making strides toward a sustainable future. Explore its key initiatives and recent achievements.

001. Environment

Reducing plastic packaging
Since 2022, Tyrolit Group has reduced the use of new plastics in its packaging by 65%, incorporating ​​ 30% of recycled plastic film and minimizing packaging thickness and weight. The company is also testing paper-based alternatives, set to be implemented in 2024 across all production sites.
 
Energy resource management
Tyrolit Group has committed to reducing energy consumption by 15% in superabrasives manufacturing, through optimization of standby modus process, temperature in general and cover process.  As of 2024, this goal is almost achieved, and a new energy management process will be rolled out across all of the group’s sites. In 2023, the European production sites used 30% renewable energy, with 11,5% self produced energy.

Chemical management
In 2018, Tyrolit Group launched a project to substitute hazardous chemical compounds with eco- friendly alternatives. By 2021, Tyrolit Group had eliminated nearly 100% of Natrium Aluminum Fluoride in resin bonded abrasives from its processes.

Circular waste management
Tyrolit Group has made significant progress in recycling waste from its manufacturing process. Since 2018, the company has been able to recycle 47% of post-wet processing waste.

Sustainability Report
Tyrolit Group published a sustainability report according to GRI for 2023 and  is committed to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to support its ongoing transition. As a part of the UN Global Compact they also submitted the COP (Communication on Progress) 2023 and disclosed the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Program) in October.

002.Social Responsibility

Tyrolit Group is also heavily invested in the education and training of its teams. Since 2017, they increased training opportunities by 100%. After adapting to a post-pandemic environment with a strong focus on online learning, 2023 marks a turning point with renewed emphasis on continuing education. New topics such as ecology, ethics, transparency, and commercial success are at the core of these programs.

Economic Innovation
In 2023, Tyrolit Group supported 22 sustainability R&D projects. By 2024, they plan to boost this number by 15%, strengthening their leadership in sustainable innovation. Furthermore, Tyrolit Group aims to increase the number of COC (Code of Conduct) certified direct and indirect suppliers, enhancing transparency and ethics throughout its supply chain.
